Trompe L’Oiel
We had our eight Contemporary Design Culture class a few days ago. This time however we moved our operations over to Limerick School of art and design to collaborate on a Trompe L’Oiel project. For this we were put into groups of 5 and sent off to make our own artworks in where we would take perspectives into account. It found it interesting in how well a piece can look even though it has been made on many different surfaces in different positions. To start we followed one of the students from the college to a quiet alley type place within the college where we found different walls and surfaces to begin our work. We decided to make a splash of water that bursts from a pipe on the wall.
I found the whole thing a great experience in working with different people who we had never met before and who were thought in a different way with different design philosophies. Each of us could bring different knowledge and experiences to the piece. It really showed how important teamwork was, everyone was throwing in different ideas back and forth to come up with the best idea. I feel that through this process it’s inevitable that any group of people could come up with some sort of concept between them in a very short period of time. I learned the importance of group work and how much more you can achieve when working in a group than if you were on your own. If I was tasked with the same projected to do on my own I could not expect the same results in such a short period of time.
Towards the end of the class we started putting our work into short presentations to show to the other groups. It was very interesting to see what the other groups had achieved and the different places they had chosen to work. After seeing the rest of the groups work I was sorry that we didn’t take more of a walk around of the college to see where else there was to set up and work but I’m still happy enough with the result.
